THE BEST OF US
The best of us see dimly through the looking glass,
In cloudy representations,
The roads that lie before us.
The spider builds his web,
The bear goes into hibernation,
The birds fly south.
The best of us live in hesitation,
Day to day, hand to mouth.
The best of us find pieces missing.
In the scary jigsaw puzzle of the ages.
The best of us find sentences deleted,
Censored books with censored pages.
The spider builds his web,
The bear goes into hibernation,
The birds sing in the trees.
The best of us drift like homeless leaves,
Swept away in the autumn breeze.
The best of us seek the guarded truths
That lurk in the mind's dark hallways.
The best of us ache for the knowledge we lack
And the pain goes with us always.
The spider builds his web,
The bear goes into hibernation,
The birds fly south.
The best of us live in hesitation,
Day to day, hand to mouth.
